Insight Into Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an attempt to transfer important aspects of human intelligence into machines.  Since there is no binding definition of the term “intelligence”, there is still no general definition of “AI”.  But what is there to say: Just like us humans, computers have to learn from data and experience, make judgments and solve problems independently – in order to do their job better and better.

AI automates repeated learning and discovery through data.  Instead of automating manual tasks, AI often performs high volumes of computerized tasks.  And it does it reliably and tirelessly.  Of course, it’s still important for humans to set up the system and ask the right questions.  AI adapts through progressive learning algorithms to enable data to do programming.  AI looks for structure and order in data so that algorithms can gain skill.  Just as an algorithm can teach itself to play chess, it can teach itself what product to recommend online next and the model adjusts accordingly when presented with new data.

As AI systems become more powerful and more general they may become superior to human performance in many domains. If this occurs, it could be a transition as transformative economically, socially, and politically as the Industrial Revolution. This could lead to extremely positive developments, but could also potentially pose catastrophic risks from accidents (safety) or misuse (security). But whatever the speed of progress in the field, it seems like there is useful work that can be done right now. Technical machine learning research into safety  and security implications is developing as a field. Safe and beneficial superintelligence has grown worldwide.

In all situations that are foreseeable or of a routine nature, today’s artificial intelligence can already be used well and AI is expected to have a wide range of potential effects, from more intelligent AI to generative and responsible AI to collaboration and automation. AI is becoming a component of everyday life as its technology makes it possible to emulate human abilities – perceiving, thinking, planning, communicating and observing, done by software effectively and efficiently at low cost.

Let’s us hope if higher intelligence does evolve one day, it will be used for a good purpose and force us to do our best – by making us work harder again to achieve our goals.
